Booking choice: The Arenal Volcano Experience, from $165 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
Most travellers who see Arenal stay in La Fortuna, the town at its foot. But plenty of visitors are based in San José, on a short trip, a business stay or a cruise-and-city itinerary, and the full-day tours exist for exactly them.
The trade-off is simple: a lot of driving in exchange for zero planning. Whether that is worth it depends on how many days you have and what you want from Arenal.
The quick answer
Yes, if San José is your base and you have one free day: the tours handle the six hours of driving, fill the morning with easy stops and finish in the hot springs, and guests rate the flagship 4.9 from 1,668 reviews. If you have two days or more, stay a night in La Fortuna instead: you will see more for less money.

How far is Arenal from San José?
About 130 km (80 miles), roughly three hours each way without stops, and more in morning traffic.
The tours climb north out of the Central Valley on Route 126, past La Paz Waterfall and Cinchona, then cross the San Carlos plains to La Fortuna. With stops, the outbound leg takes most of the morning.

Pickup around 6:30 AM, scenic stops all morning, lunch near the volcano, about two hours in the hot springs, dinner on the way back, and home around 8:30 PM.
- 6:30 AM: hotel pickup in San José.
- Morning: coffee farm, La Paz Waterfall, Cinchona, the Las Iguanas stop.
- Midday: a short cultural presentation and lunch near Arenal.
- Afternoon: Paradise Hot Springs, about two hours.
- Evening: dinner on the drive back, home about 14 hours after pickup.

Is fourteen hours too long?
For most guests, no: the reviews repeat that the many stops break up the drive and the guide keeps it entertaining.
It is still a long day. Guests warn about Monday-morning traffic in San José and a weaker dinner than lunch, and older travellers should know that the stops are short and easy but the seat time adds up. Sleep well the night before.
What do you actually see of Arenal?
The volcano itself, from lunch and from the hot springs, if the clouds allow; you do not hike it on the flagship day.
Arenal's summit catches cloud, especially after midday and in the rainy season. For a trail with volcano views, the lava trails and hot springs day spends an hour on the 1968 lava-flow trails. See is Arenal still active for what you can and cannot do on the volcano.

Want to stand on the old lava flows? This day adds an hour on the 1968 trails before the hot springs.
Explore the lava trails and hot springs dayIs it better to stay overnight in La Fortuna?
If you have the time, yes: you skip six hours on the road and the local tours cost about $100.
From La Fortuna you can do a real volcano hike, swim at La Fortuna Waterfall and soak in a natural hot river in one day, then see the volcano at sunrise. The La Fortuna waterfall, volcano hike and hot springs tour and the waterfall, volcano trail and hot river tour pick up only in La Fortuna.

Who is the day trip right for?
Travellers based in San José with one free day, people who do not want to drive in Costa Rica, and anyone after an easy, scenic day.
One guest summed it up well: great for someone who is not visiting La Fortuna separately, an extra day on a business trip, people who do not want to drive, and older travellers, since it is fairly accessible (the tour itself is not wheelchair accessible). If you are going to La Fortuna anyway, skip it.

Which day trip should you book?
The Arenal Volcano Experience for an easy day, the Mega Combo for ziplines, and the private day for La Fortuna Waterfall and the Hanging Bridges.

Can I do Arenal and Monteverde in one day from San José?
Not sensibly. They are in different directions from La Fortuna and each is a full day; pick one, or stay over in the region.
Can I drive myself to Arenal for the day?
You can, but it is about three hours each way on mountain roads; most visitors who drive stay at least one night.
Can the tour drop me in La Fortuna?
Yes. Go Tours can drop you at a central La Fortuna hotel instead of returning to San José; dinner is then not included.
